I still can't believe derailments like this happen. Isn't a train the safest vehicle to ride? I sure hope this isn't another texting incident or some sort of human error. 	A Bad Night for the Red Line Right before the evening rush hour on 22 December 2009, a Red Line train running north to Alewife derailed and damaged the switch just 200 yards south of the terminal, forcing Red Line operations to terminate at Harvard (the one at Alwife is the only other crossover switch north of the one just south of Harvard). MBTA pulled resources from other parts of the city to build makeshift shuttle service for stops north of Harvard to Alewife - one of those happened to be uncommitted (and some already committed) Silver Line diesel-electric articulated trolley buses. Here, one runs past me just north of Davis Square. The following bus is just a normal articulated diesel bus. Note: the shuttles were paralyzed by heavier than usual Cambridge traffic on Massachusetts Avenue (likely from people who had been picked up at Harvard to avoid the debacle), bringing their effective capacity to zero and making it more time saving to walk to Alewife. Farragut North station reopens after morning derailment (Gazette.net)
The Farragut North Metro Station reopened at 12:11 p.m. today after a train on the Red Line derailed this morning. Three passengers suffered minor bumps and bruises in the derailment, Metro said in a statement. Metro officials initially reported no injuries in the incident.
